Through – among other things – her contribution to the Romanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2013, Alexandra Pirici became a central protagonist of a generation of younger artists using performance as a medium. For the FFT and the Impulse Festval, she has developde a living exhibition with memorable images, belonging to the memory and perception patterns of today. With her dancers and performers, she transforms art works into performative acts, which are exhibited live in the museum. Pussy Riot’s punk prayer in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior mingles with Melania Trump’s and Michelle Obama’s confusingly similar speeches. Whereas performance art usually declares bodies to be works of art, in Pirici’s work, artworks become bodies and images become reality.
Through opening hours, during which the performance can be visited like an exhibit, it gradually changes. Visitors are invited to return over the subsequent exhibition days using the same ticket to follow its course. The artist will be visiting Düsseldorf in advance to speak with art critic Claire Bishop, author of “Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship” on June 5th.
Once again, the Impulse Theater Festival presents the most important independent theater productions from the German-speaking region. In 2017, Cologne will be the center of the festival. Site-specific productions are being developed in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Düsseldorf. On June 23rd and 30th, a bus shuttle will travel from FFT Düsseldorf to the festival in Cologne.
