There is nothing more important than family! It is sanctified. It is the norm in Moldova, and also after the USSR’s downfall. But what happens if a family cannot cope with the economic challenges posed by a political crisis, and dissolution is impending? Intertwined with the personal experience of the loss of her parents, Nicoleta Esinencu and her protagonists probe for family as a term in the 21stcentury. The storytellers form a collective voice with their choir, casting a scathing view on monogamy and private property, finally damning not only the patriarchal system but capitalism itself.
Nicoleta Esinencu’s much-discussed theatre projects take a look at Moldova’s social reality and the contradictions, in Post-Soviet times, connected with them. They also cast a critical glance at the history of the whole of Europe.
Nicoleta Esinencu (*1978, Chișinău, USSR / Moldovia) lives and works as a writer and director in Chișinău. Following a grant to attend Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, she gained international recognition with “FUCK YOU, Eu,ro.Pa!”, going on to win the Rumanian dramAcum theatre award. The text was published in the reader for the Romanian pavilion at the 51stVenice Biennal in 2005. The artist guested at the Leipzig Book Fair numerous times as well as at the International Literature Festival in Berlin. In 2009, she was one of 16 stage writers selected by the Goethe Institute to take part in the project “After the Fall – Europe after 1989”. In 2010, Esinencu was one of the co-founders of independent initiative teatruspălătorie, grown from the necessity to create an alternative space for the arts in Chișinău, wherein artists could act and react in relation to Moldova’s political and social events.
Since the event venue itself had to close down in 2017, women’s collective teatru-spălătorie have continued their work without a stage of their own. Nicoleta Esinencu has been a guest of the DAAD Berlin artist program since June 2019.
