Rarely is a genre of dance as cliché-ridden as is the so-called belly dance. From an orientalistic, eroticised and exoticised image of femaleness down to an esoteric charging. All the while, there is no such thing as the one belly dance. It is comprised of countless dance styles that the West summarises under this umbrella term. “I am not your Arabian princess”: Dancer and choreographer Tümay Kılınçel trained in some of those dances. She intends to put them on the dance scene’s agenda as artistic and emancipated genres. Because only this will enable an artistic positioning towards the phenomenon. With lunatic costumes, a great helping of a resistant spirit and much love for dance, Kılınçel creates a space and a language of empowerment.

Tümay Kılınçel
