Join our gravity! Be part of our gravity!
In physics, everything moves toward everything else. In a gravitational system, things pull at each other – not because they match, but because they are falling in the same direction. Tiny particles and heavy hunks, fine material and glutinous bodies – they all form a reluctant disorder, or a still life. Rotterdam Presenta employ the means of choreography, music and object art to examine the coinciding collapse of everyday objects and people. They found the fictitious “Aerobic Life Institute” and invite their audience into Düsseldorf’s Planwerkstatt, to communally try out gravity. Bodies, plastic cups, helium-filled balloons, tools and air cushions fall together or veer towards a controlled tilt. They topple on top of each other, and, with time, start overwriting the room.
GRAVITY PIECE is part of the research series “complicity with active material” that is dedicated to the performative qualities of material, surfaces and objects. As a critique in the dispute with anthropocentric world views and stage settings, they produced their performance “accident exercises” which guested at ERGO Ipsum as an FFT co-production, back in 2019. In it, Rotterdam Presenta exhibited different bodies, moments, and forms of collision, based on the accident as a sudden impact. With GRAVITY PIECE, they are now moving from collision to collapse.
The GRAVITY PIECE performance will be complemented by an installation that opens on November 18 and which will be visible before and after the GRAVITY PIECE performances.
