In May 1970, Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara sent a telegram to Düsseldorf gallerist Konrad Fischer: “I am still alive.” For almost 50 years, On Kawara was only present in his pictures, telegrams and postcards and didn’t appear in public in person. In his performance “On Kawara’s Pure Consciousness”, Brussels-based Japanese artist Yuki Okumura deals with this radical approach to physical, spatial and temporal presence: Okumura speaks through various bodies and voices to us about On Kawara, while being simultaneously both present and absent, alive and dead. He is very close to us and yet eludes us still.

The performance is accompanied by the screening of two video pieces by Okumura, dealing with the transformation of conceptual art in the digital age. The evening is followed by a concert for e-guitar and synthesizer by the German-Japanese musician duo WÖRC (David Pampus & Shunsuke Oshio).

Yuki Okumuraw as born in 1978 in Aomori, Japan. Lives and works between Brussels, Maastricht, and Tokyo. Engaging identity, individuality, and authorship, Okumura explores new forms of self-portraiture and auto-biography through his artistic and personal overlaps with the works and lives of other artists, both from the 60s–70s conceptual generation and his contemporaries. In doing so, his gestures at once poetically narrate parallel art histories and playfully challenge the institutional system of exhibition formulation and artwork attribution. Recent projects include “The Man Who” (2019), “Welcome Back, Gordon Matta-Clark” (2017), “Hisachika Takahashi by Yuki Okumura” (2016), “Away from the Light of Greenwich: I Met On Kawana” (2016), “Measuring Roman Ondak” (2015), “Body Contract (Exceptional Case)” (2014), “Canned Multiverse” (2012–13), and “Remembering Unknown (Artist’s Ghost)” (2012).
