„It started as a magnificent ruin even before the building was completed”

Reyner Banham on Brutalism

“What was has always been. What is has always been. What will be has always been”.

Louis Kahn

“One can never distinguish between the future-to-come and the coming-back of a spectre”.

Jacques Derrida

What should we remember and how do buildings, videos, objects shape our memory? How is a nostalgic look into the past related to the feeling of a “lost future” (Mark Fisher)?

The Dusseldorf based choreographers and performers Montserrat Gardò Castillo and Petr Hastik have been researching about brutalism and nostalgia since the beginning of the pandemic. They have developed a series of online sessions. In small groups, they explore how to create shared artistic experiences online that challenge the separation between “maker” and audience. In doing so, they draw from a pool of experimental, intermedia approaches, perform remotely, instigate collective thinking practices, and tell non-linear stories. The goal of the sessions is to create a safe space for engagement and exploration that challenges the separation between producer and consumer and generates shared experiences.

In cooperation with FFT, three sessions will be offered:

Sun, 14.3. The Brutal Concert
Sun, 21.3. Man-made landscapes and crashes
Sun, 28.3. The ghosting images

Number of participants per session: 10

Duration: approx. 90 minutes without breaks (with possibility for follow-up discussion)

The sessions are interconnected but can also be accessed independently.

The sessions will take place via the Zoom video chat platform. A computer with internet connection, preferably headphones and a quiet place are needed to participate.
