We all once lived in another time. Everything was new, incessantly revealing and transforming itself. Humans were not necessarily just humans. – Animals, too, were not categorically animals. They could be one thing and also something else. All creatures, visible or invisible, ghastly shadows, lights, absurdities, carboard boxes or pencil sketches on the wall, bathed in the same transmutational river. A child’s play.

subbotnik dive into the highly transformational childhood universe. While their last play “Denn jeder sucht ein All zu sein” (“For they all desire to be universal”) dealt with life’s twilight years, with parting and grief, they have now dedicated themselves to life’s beginnings, accompanied by a lot of music and poetry. But how do you tell stories from a time you can barely remember as an adult? The gifted narrators around Oleg Zhukov, Martin Kloepfer and Kornelius Heidebrecht explore worlds between bonding and liberation, security and fears. Who or what one is or becomes dissolves, disperses and turns to sludge. Webs and memories will be turned into masks, live on stage, and they can be worn on the head as paper mâché masks. While playing with grown-up perspectives and fantastic worlds of recollection, norms meet nonsense. The stage space as a creation tool shed lingering between emergence and dissolution. Music, games, objects, material, stories entwine one another, into each other, and behold: It shakes! It shivers! It moves! Bring your children! This will not be without its consequences…

subbotnik
Düsseldorf- and Cologne-based theatre collective subbotnik connects vocal and instrumental compositions, narration and live performance in order to form an idiosyncratic stage language. For their unique contributions to theatre, the group was awarded the Support Grant for Performing Arts of the City of Düsseldorf, back in 2013. With their first production “Die Sehnsucht des Menschen ein Tier zu werden”, the German-Russian-Ukrainian trio toured North Rhine-Westphalia, while 2014’s follow-up “Robinson Crusoe” received invitations to children and youth theatre gathering Westwind as well as to Spielarten. subbotnik successfully opened the FFT’s 2014/2015 season with their piece “Der Traum eines lächerlichen Menschen”. FFT co-production “Götter. Wie die Welt entstand” received the Cologne children and youth theatre award 2016 as well as another invitation to children and youth theatre gathering Westwind 2017 as well as to Berlin festival Spurensuche. Follow-up production “Helden” was invited to children and youth theatre gathering Westwind 2018 and to Augenblick mal! 2019 in Berlin.
