Der Untergang der Excelsior

Die Chronik einer Tragödie

by Georg W. Kampfer
Theatre Theatre & Performance

At the beginning of February of 1866, the merchant vessel Excelsior runs aground in heavy sea off the coast of the island of Juist, where it subsequently sinks. 22 shipwrecked are able to save themselves, clinging to a mast. They are well visible from Juist. On the island, they plan their rescue. Yet inclement weather, turf wars, bureaucracy, and egotism delay the rescue for more than one week. This results in numerous further victims.

With Der Untergang der Excelsior, SeTA presents the premiere of the excellently researched chronicles of said disaster by Georg W. Kampfer in a theatre version by Kathrin Sievers. A bitter comedic piece about human failure in catastrophe handling.
